Kwame Nkrumah’s Contribution to Pan- Africanism:
An Afrocentric Analysis
BY D. ZIZWE POE
In his book, Kwame Nkrumah’s Contribution to Pan-Africanism: An Afrocentric Analysis, Professor Poe provides a unique, comprehensive and critical account of the political thought and practice of Kwame Nkrumah, a pioneer and pivotal leader in the Pan-African Movement from 1945-1966. Employing an Afrocentric approach in his study, he argues that the life and work of Nkrumah offer an essential philosophical foundation and strategic model of optimal agency in the pursuit of Pan-African initiatives and critical Afrocentric studies. Professor Poe begins his account with a presentation of key terms and essential conceptual considerations engaged in developing his methodology and an Afrocentric paradigm. He then leads the reader easily and skillfully through a complexity of interrelated topics including: the development of Nkrumah’s Pan-African ideas and their evolution as expressed in his various works; key persons and historical forces which shaped his agency, his national and Pan-African policies, his organizing practices; and a summary of his philosophical and practical legacy. This work is a critical contribution to Nkrumahist and Pan-African studies and a rich resource for understanding the history and current contours of Pan-African discourse and initiatives of our times.
